Genesis 1:1
“1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Gen. 1:1 ESV
Gen 1:1 is the most foundational Scripture in all of biblical theology. To understand the bible, we must understand the nature of God (at least as much as our flawed, human abilities allow). He is omniscient and omnipresent in all things because he is outside of space and time. From God’s perspective, everything is in the past, present, and future all at the same time, because for Him, there is no time. He does anything and everything according to His will.
Scripture tells us that God knows all things (2 Chron. 16:9; Isa. 40:13; Rom. 11:34; Heb. 4:13; 1 John 3:20). He knows the number of days in our lives (Job 14:5; Acts 17:26); he knows the future (Isa. 42:8-9); and He knows what is in our hearts (Ps. 7:9, Rom. 8:27). He is the definition and representation of all that is good. He is the totality and perfect standard of that which is righteous, virtuous, wholesome, and honorable.
Prayer
Father, forgive us of the flawed and disastrous desires of our heart, and help us to know you and be like our Saviour, Jesus. Teach us your Word so we may be faithful to the end. We desire to be good and faithful servants. Show us what we need to give up in our individual lives to serve you fully. Amen.
